Halifax Defeat Manchester, 123-119

In what was the most exciting and all around most enjoyable basketball game I’ve seen involving the Rainmen, Halifax pulled out a huge victory despite almost blowing a big lead at the start of the fourth.

I’ll add my comments as I go after the jump, but this is going up now so other people can comment.

– Rob Sanders had an absolutely huge game – 30 pts on just thirteen field goal attempts and 16 rebounds.

– Halifax contained Manchester most of the game and didn’t let any player burn them.  Desmond Ferguson looked like he was going to heat up but Dandridge stepped his defensive game up and locked him down.  Dandridge really benefited from the return of Silverhorn since he had a bit less pressure, played fewer minutes and had more space to operate.

– Halifax were up by as much as 24 points before Manchester went on a 14-0 run at the begining of the fourth.  Rick Lewis didn’t call a time out until it was a 12-0 run.  Down the stretch I felt that there were a few big coaching errors including not calling time outs, putting the ball in Twyman’s hands when the other team was fouling despite the fact that he was horrible from the line all night, and not fixing the press break earlier.  Luckily Halifax had a big lead but I feel that if Manchester had two more minutes I don’t know if the result would be the same.  Halifax’s free throw shooting was also pretty wretched which kept Manchester in the game.

– Manchester are physical but I don’t know if it consitutes being dirty.  That said, the refs tonight did not keep the game from getting out of line and even made some downright terrible calls. (i.e. that terrible tech on Bailey)

–  The team looked better when Strick was on the floor.  He is good at keeping people alert and moving on both ends of the floor.  I thought Mayes and McNeal had their best games of the season, even if it doesn’t really show in the box score.  Mayes played good D and had a great hussle steal, and McNeal had some good moments on offense and was a lot more willing to mix it up down low.

– Tony Bennett was not that impress impressive, but he did just fly in today.  He failed to score did score ten points in 15 minutes and while he has a great handle he has SirVal’s shot selection.  I would have liked to see Hammack and Ramey get his minutes since both really deserve more playing time.  I don’t blame Bennett, but I don’t know why Lewis gave him so much time.

– The crowd looked to be in the 2300 range, but it was as loud as it’s been since the first game last November.  Manchester were great to heckle and a lot of people in Section23 were ripping into them.  I really enjoy the fact that there is a whole group of people with season tickets who talk to each other, pick up on chants and heckles and just generally serve as sort of a community in the section.  Mass entertainment often lacks that sort of interaction so it was good to enjoy it and soak it in tonight.

– It’s now 10 three pointers equals a Big Mac – tonight they knocked down nine.

  1. Okay I just got home from the game.

    A) My throat is sore from yelling. I am having a hot lemon drink to soothe it. Not kidding.

    B) Those couple hundred or so fans that were going crazy – simply amazing! You are the hard core fans and you know it! Crazy, I love it.

    C) Strick you are the man! You are the floor general. You are the shot in the arm this team needed. My fave player now. I’m sold.

    D) Rob Sanders. Wow you are the real deal.

    E) Tyronne McNeal. You have heart! You got my out of my chair TWICE! I can’t ***kin believe it! Yu shocked me.

Okay I need to cool down. What a game… We are on the way….

  2. Strickland was not happy to be on the bench, when the Millrats started to edge back into the game. Unless coach COACHES, he has another “internal issue” brewing methinks.

  3. The box score is missing Bennett stats. He scored 10 points. I thought he looked great, crazy fast, got to the line, made some great passes. He was a major spark plug. Dude is unreal fast and I really think he was key in winning the game.

    That’s my take.

  4. That was the Rob Sanders who stole the show at All Star weekend. I loved that performance. His interaction with Crook was pretty hilarious, too. Eric got on him about not puttin that one back early on, but man, that one at the end was insane. It was like he was all alone at a late night gym. Textbook.

  5. I’m gonna have to disagree with you about Tony Bennett, I thought he played great for getting in today.

Here’s a thought for the Rainmen for next game….run more then one goddamn offensive set. Incase there are any Vermont fans, get ready to watch this set: wing players screen up for the ball, get the pass out on the wing, the the player on the block either fronts or sets the pick for a pick and roll. You know how I know that play? WE RAN IT IN HIGH SCHOOL!!! And it was one of our three plays…IN HIGH SCHOOL! When the f*ck is someone going to set a screen away from the ball.

That being said it was a fantastic game, Chris and Fin, I thought the fat guy in jeans at the end of the Millrats bench was going to get up and fight you guys, keep up the good work. It’s tough to heckle from all the way over in section 8.

  6. Glad to see we are representing the hecklers.. the whole section and 22 was outstanding. I heard some great stuff from 24 as well. Keep up the good work. I agree on Bennett, he did play well , is fast and elusive and can get to the rim. I wrote about him in my blog. It is a testament to Lewis coaching that a dude can walk off the plane and play 15 minutes in our offence. Hilarious. Actually I was hoping 33 would come over, he was funny.. I agree that Hammack and Ramey are losing minutes to every new guy that comes in. Kevin didn’t have a great game, but he also gets better as the game goes on.

I wrote in my blog that I actually thought they ran a couple more sets including a couple low post screens (correct me if I am wrong as a soccer coach) and while the high screen was happening, there was some more movement away which seemed to give the open looks. Just my two cents.. I am stoked though, Jimmy’s block shouldn’t go unmentioned, that was unreal as was the Dandridge Alley oop..

  7. Tony Bennett looked great, Chris, totally disagree. He and Jimmy are going to make a hell of a backcourt, although Lewis’s use of Hammack is perplexing. Was he asleep when Hammack ripped apart the Throwbacks in the pre-season? This kid can play, but not sitting on the bench.

  8. I agree with crook I really liked Bennet that game and so did the other people watching the feed on the chat. There were a couple of times we had to check who exactly is was on some plays and it turned out to be him.

  9. Okay – I admit it I was wrong about Bennett. I looked back at the boxscore and thought about the game and while I don’t think he’s the reason Halifax won, I do think he played a really good game. I think I am just bitter because I think that Hammack and Ramey deserve more minutes.

  10. My notes from the game.

    1st

    – Rainmen getting inside but are not finishing at all
    – Baily huge block and has been playing solidly so far but is a really bad free throw shooter
    – Manchesters is just hitting tough shots that are contested – good D
    – What is with the OFF boards the Rainmen are getting. I have never seen this before
    – Sanders is just a beast and a bad ass

    2nd

    – Dandrige takes too many shots quickly. He takes the wrong shots but he also takes the right shots. He just needs to pick and choose. Like not the one that was 10 feet from behind the arc (even though he hit it)
    – Silverhorn does not have the rythem on first few shots
    – Mitchell is playing badly and making bad passes
    – First Bennett sighting and he looks really solid. Quick as all hell
    – Mavs made some ridiculous comment about if there is free big macs he is going to go around the stadium looking for used tickets and get like 20. I laughed really really hard because I was picturing it.
    – Silverhorn has the rythem and is back.

    3rd

Was in Transit on the way home from work.

    4th

    – Suprised to hear they were up by 24 at one point as it is now at 9
    – Looks like Halifax is playing too relaxed and is making bad passes
    – Most turnovers ever without a time out
    – Somehow they may loose this game
    – Finally put it away

In case you can’t tell, I dont think too much of our “coach”. He is indescribably awful.

  12. ps.. imagine what we could do with a 6-3 team with coaching.. if we are appointing non basketball coaches, lets get Belicheck until the football draft, then we will have plays..

  13. That game was a lot of fun but I would have enjoyed it more if Lewis did not make the game closer than it had to be. I do not understand how this team still does not score coming out of time outs or have more than two plays. Lewis is never off the bench yelling out mismatches or anything. It is embarrassing to watch as a basketball fan.

Rob Sanders is an absolute beast. I think he is the second best player in the PBL right now. Imagine how good he would be with a real coach finding ways for him to score?

  14. ^
That might be a huge problem in the off season. PBL is a place for players to showcase their skills to get to a bigger paycheque in Europe or the D-League.

If Lewis isn’t even trying to make his best players look good on the court, why come to Halifax?
